Children who are learning to read love to follow along in a book while they listen to the story being told. As an important tool in the Robbins Library literacy program, Book and Tape Kits have always been popular with transition readers and their parents. Children can enjoy the development of a story even if they miss a few words because they are not distracted with the mechanics of deciphering unfamiliar vocabulary. Some recordings even include auditory prompts alerting the child when to turn the page.
Many of the Children’s Room’s well loved classic story kits with cassette tapes need to be replaced as most families now have CD players instead. The Book and CD Kits are produced specifically for a stage of learning to read and help early readers gain confidence and enjoy longer, more complex stories and chapter books. Unfortunately the Children’s Room has not been able to keep up with the changes in technology since funds for this special collection are very limited.
This collection is very important to certain children at the critical stage of reading which requires the leap into attempting more difficult stories on their own.
When you purchase A Taste of Arlington’s raffle tickets you will benefit the literacy program so that the Children’s Library can continue to offer families access to such a wonderful resource. And you could walk home with an exciting prize in the bargain!
